Week-end on marae

About 80 Christchurch secondary school pupils will spend the week-end at the Rehua Marae, in Springfield Road, to learn about Maori life.

They will learn how to prepare a hangi, how to make Maori bread, and the art of craft work such as weaving and tuku tuku panelling. Their parents have also been invited to take part. The group, which includes several adults, attends classes in Maori studies and language taken by Mrs Maaka Jones, an itinerant Maori language teacher. Principals and representatives of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association will be formally welcomed to the marae on Saturday morning.
