Shield rule ehanges

The rules governing the staging of Ranfurly Shield matches have been altered. The rule changes will mean it will be extremely difficult for union’s to refuse challenges for the “log-of-wood” in the same way that the present holder, North Auckland, did in its recognised home matches against Southland and Otago at the end of last season. The broad principles on which the redrafted rules have been prepared are: Special challenges should be abolished;

> The rules should provide I for challenges where the shield has been held from 1 the previous season, and i challenges where the shield s changes hands during the ■ season; t There should be some proi vision regarding unions in . division two of the national . provincial championship, and • To assist small challenging unions, there should be 1 some provisions regarding ’ expenses, but payment to be at the option of the holder* of the shield.
