Contest judging
Sir, —On Sunday evening I was embarrassed by TVl’s Rosemary McLeod on the Singer for Asia. She was insulting to contestants and rudeness was her forte. To include her on the panel was a mistake. Constructive criticism we all can expect and accept but not rude, cutting remarks. — Yours, etc., N. B. GRAY. Scargill. April 15, 1979. Sir, —In the Singer for Asia contest, one of Ute judges, Rosemary McLeod, was not consistent in either comments or her scoring, compared with the three experts accompanying her on the panel. To say that a singer is very good and give 11 points and then say that another is poor and give 11 points also, is no more than a farce. Entertainment judging should be left to people who understand it, for example, Ray Columbus. One got the impression that she found the contest too “hohum,” and many viewers and contestants must have found her the same. Television One should be more selective in choosing a fourth expert, and, above all, be fair to the contestants. —Yours, etc., GARY PRIEST, April 15, 1979.
