Access to hospital

Sir, — No-one disputes the need for access to the hospital for fire services or for any other reason. How-> ever, there appears to be considerable doubt as to the validity of your editorial arguments and the board’s reasons for proposing a bridge from Rolleston Avenue. Correspondents have pointed out that the fire services’ trials are far from conclusive, and that emergency patient access over such a bridge is unlikely to result in the patient being treated in the hospital any more quickly than if the existing access were used. Your editorial speaks of fire service and emergency access only, but it is quite clear that the board expects a much wider usage of the bridge. There should be further inquiry into these inconsistencies, and the board must disclose

the alternative access routes it has considered before a tranquil part of our city is lost. — Yours, etc., M. D. MOONEY. April 18, 1979.
