‘Times' dispute drags
NZPA-Reuter London The "Sunday Times.” “The Times.” and its supplements will not appear "until further notice,” Times Newspapers, Ltd. management has said. After a meeting of T.N.L.’s board, a statement announced that the 3000 staff temporarily re-employed after publication was suspended on November 30 would not be re-engaged. But, in what appears to be a last attempt to achieve early re-publication, the management said those who attend this week would be paid while meetings already arranged with the unions in the next few days took place. The statement added: “This does not, however, represent re-engagement nor reinstatement, nor does Times Newspapers see any prospect of general agreement taking place at present.” The management was •‘actively considering the courses open to it,” the statement said, although a spokesman added that these did not include either closing the papers finally or selling off the titles. “The Times” now apparently as far away from republication as ever, the main stumbling block has been the failure to agree with the National Graphical Association over the issue of journalists and advertising staff using new technology to key copy directly on to computer terminals.
“The Times” has offered arbitration over the issue, and the N.G.A.’s national executive will consider this today.
