Petrol-sale rise ’will cost $7M’
PA Wellington The size of the in- : creased margin granted to j petrol sellers has been criticised by Mr R. W. Prebble, the member of Parliament for Auckland Central, as adding more than S7M a year to the cost of motorists’ petrol. “In spite of the denials of the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) it is clear that the timing and the amount of the increase have been caused by Government's unnecessary ban on weekend petrol sales,” Mr Prebble said. "As I warned during the week-end, unless the Government takes a strong line with the oil industry, this increase will be the first of many. “During the last oil shortage, the oil companies manipulated prices to increase their profits greatly. The National Government thinks that by exaggerating the crisis New Zealand will save overseas funds but they are playing into the hand's of the oil companies. “The extra S7M retail price margin will still have to be paid when normal sales resume, thus permanently affecting costs,” Mr Prebble said.
