You like-a da student pizza?
Canterbury University stu-, dents will try their baking; on the public in Cathedral; Square this afternoon. Christchurch pizza parlours have promised about : 50 pizzas for the students’l pizza baking contest, which will be judged at 2.30 p.m.! Pieces of pizza will then be sold to the public, and proceeds will go to Dr Barnardo’s, this year’s capping Charity. Students will also hold a charity collection today at Suburban shopping centres. Dr Barnardo’s runs a family day-care centre for up to 25 children at Ensors Road, Opawa, which is full to capacity. Mrs J. Ross, the organisation’s social worker, says the students’ help will enable Dr Barnardo’s to extend its services into the community. "The money raised from capping activities will pay the salary of a familv dav-care co-ordinator. The co-ordinator will match children needing care in the day with families tn the community prepared to look after them. Tomorrow’, about 30 students are expected to take
part in the Avon River bike race at 1 p.m. Participants will enter the river opposite Noahs Hotel and will wade with their bicycles to Victoria Square, where the winners will be announced. A race for home-made rafts will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from Kerrs Reach to the Wainoni overbridge. Various Christchurch organisations, including the news media, the Fire Service, the Army, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force have been invited to take part. Prizes will be given for the best, the biggest, and the fastest rafts.
Members of the public have been invited to the New Zealand "Chunda Mile” championships, at Rugby Park on Sunday at noon. Before running in the various races, all competitors will be required to drink beer and eat several meat pies. Other universities have been invited to take part.
This year's capping magazine. ‘‘Needeep II.” will be on sale in central and suburban Christchurch on Monday and Tuesday.
