Rail rises 'expected’
Because the Railways had been running at a loss, the forecast 12J per cent increase in charges was not unexpected. said the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr D. G. Sanders) last evening. As the South Island was further away from the main markets, the increase would affect Canterbury manufacturers more than others. The Canterbury representative on the council of the Road Transport Association,
Mr N. S. Bidwell, said that carriers would notice little difference because thev were competitive with rail services.
The Rail Action Group believes that the expected increase in charges is “negative propaganda to brainwash the public into thinking that the Railways cannot pay their way.”
A spokesman for the group. Mr S. H. Rice, said that the Government had done the same with the Rangatira service.
“The public became convinced that the service would be scrapped and there was little backwash when it was,” he said.
The group also believed that the expected increase was an indication that New Zealand’s transport policy needed to be reviewed urgently.
The railways had to remain the backbone of New Zealand’s transport system.
