Selectors named
PA Wellington The task of selecting the New Zealtthd team for the 1980 Moscow Olympics remains with the men who decided last year’s Commonwealth Games team. Messrs Lance Cross, Ray Dutton and Bruce Cameron were re-elected to the selection panel on the first ballot at the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association executive meeting in Wellington on Tuesday. Voting figures were not released though there had been suggestions during the weeks leading up to the ! meeting that Mr Cameron, I who has served only one |term on the panel, may face [strong challenges from one [of the four unsuccessful [nominees. I Those who challenged unsuccessfully were Messrs [ Brian Bremner, Geoff Jacki son, Brian O’Brien and Ron
Shakespeare. After the elec»j . tion, Mr Cross was unani- . mously reappointed panel I chairman. Mr Cross told the execu-! , tive that in the past travel; costs by selection panel; members had been in excess of what they needed to be. . It was important that they kept in close touch with the various sports bodies but it was unnecessary for all three members of the selection panel to attend ail trials and championships. I The meeting learnt that , the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Cup for 1979 has been awarded to the organising committee of the World rowing championships held on Lake Karapiro last November. The only other year the cup has been awarded to a group in New Zealand was in 1950 when the Empire Games were held in Auck« • land.
