‘News to me’

PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) yesterday said he was surprised at a weekend report quoting the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Templeton) suggesting that educational programmes could be shown on television.

“It is a new one to me,"’ said Mr Muldoon at a news conference after the morning session of the Cabinet. “I would not think we have got much support lor that in the short term,” he said. Television was trying to balance its budget and he doubted whether it would have much room “to put in anything by way of

gratuitous programming for education.”

“I would think that is long term, rather than short term.” Asked whether he had told Mr Templeton this, Mr Muldoon said: “No, but I am going to.” The Government Caucus would discuss the financial future of television again tomorrow, said Mr Muldoon. The Cabinet had spent some time yesterday afternoon looking at costs.

The main decision before the Government was whether there would be an increase in licence fees, but it was unlikely a decision would be reached at tomorrow’s Caucus meeting, he said.
