Aid given to Bangladesh
A group of Christchurch children aged between eight and 13 has given two wells to supply people in Bangladesh with clean pure water. The children liked to do handwork after school. A good neighbour who also liked handwork helped them and they met in her home. Soon, they had a lot of attractive things, many more than they could use. They held a stall and raised about SIOO, which the children decided should go to U.N.I.C.E.F. (The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund) for a well in Bangladesh. The children had enjoyed the project, so they made more things. Helped by parents, who backed cakes, they held
another stall and raised a little more than $lOO. Again it was given to U.N.I.C.E.F. The money went to Bangladesh for a second well, and the small surplus was used to buy vegetable seeds. The good work of the Christchurch children has been told throughout the world in an international newsletter from U.N.I.C.E.F.
Perhaps other groups could do the same. In this year, the International Year of the Child, children can help other children in the poorer countries and enjoy doing the work. If you do something like this, write in an tell us about it, because then we can show people that we in the South Island are helping others.
