Tikumu’s letter

Dear Readers, Good news for children, everywhere. This was the message of the Peace Bell on Universal Children’s Day at United Nations’ Headquarters in New York. Dressed in national costumes representing the six continents of the world, nine children rang the bell to usher in The International Year of the Child (1.Y.C.).

Now, I.Y.C. is well under way. Governments, service groups, and thousands of concerned people are working to make the world a better place for children. More than half of the world’s children need food, water, medical aid, and education. In the developing countries, which ar* mostly in the hot parts of the world, it is estimated that 200 million children are hungry, and 550 million cannot read or write. This year, effort is being made to step up the aid

already being given. Money and many skilled people are needed. New Zealand parents and people who work with children are concerned about their rights. Some children are suffering because of poverty and neglect. Most people would like to help. Everyone can, and the people behind I.Y.C. have pledged themselves to do something for children everywhere. In Christchurch, an I.Y.C. Committee is working and planning to make this year a memorable one for you — through entertainments, art and craft workshops, competitions, sports meetings, to name just a few activities. We hope this will not end iz 1979. Take part, where you can. Think about the rights of all children, and remember that rights also carry responsibilities. Above all, SPEAK UP. Tikumu
