Last days of former great hotel
PA Auckland The Great Northern Hotel (formerly the Hotel Auckland) has seen its last guest and drawn its last giass of beer.
The hotel, once perhaps the finest in Auckland, closed its doors on Saturday night. Its furniture, including some “fine Queen Anne facsimiles,” will be auctioned. Some of it is being stored elsewhere in the meantime to thwart souvenir hunters. The Great Northern was a Lion Brewery hotel. The brewery last" year decided not to continue with the lease. Discussions were held with staff and their union on their future. Some of the older members were happy to retire and many others were found jobs. A skeleton staff said “good-bye” to the last casual guests on Friday and looked after bar patrons for the last time on Saturday. The hotel stopped taking tour groups about last September.
