Narrow loss for Japan

PA Dunedin Japan was beaten but certainly not disgraced by j South Island Universities in a tight game at Carisbrook yesterday. The university team was fortunate to win the game ! 24-21. Only lapses of con- • centration. combined- with ibad tackling, allowed South I Island Universities to score two of its three tries. Japan quickly went to a 9-nil lead after seven minutes with some sound play and a brilliant solo try by Yugo Matsuo, who dotted down under the bar after using two side-steps. But a bad lack of tackling let the university team score two tries and run up 15 ! points in only five minutes. Late in the game some poor handling by the Japanese team let the South Island Universities clinch the game with a converted try which took it to a 24-15 lead. “Poor tackling gave away those 15 points,” said Ryb Saito, the Japanese manager. ! "But I was very pleased with the way our team came back after that?’
