Close hockey win

NZPA Adelaide A last-minute penalty by Ramesh Patel gave New Zealand a 3-2 victory over South Australia, at Adelaide yesterday, in a warm-up match to the world tournament in Perth later this week. After leading 2-0 at halftime, New Zealand was hit by two quiek goals from South Australia’s David Francis, leading a rejuvenated South Australian attack. The match looked like finishing at 2-2 until New Zealand, the present Olympic gold medal holders, staged a

late attacking burst which saw three shots at goal deflected by the South Australian goalkeeper. The last shot resulted in a penalty in front, and Patel made no mistake. South Australia, the Australian champion side, had a solid build-up for the match in a bid to revenge their 4-2 defeat by New Zealand in their last encounter two years ago. The $lOO,OOO international tournament begins in Perth on April 20. Scores: New Zealand 3 (Ineson, Lawrence, Patel) beat South Australia 2 (D. Francis 2).
