Penney wins youth trials
Philip Penney, who only recently switched from crewed to single-handed yachting, will represent Canterbury in the monotype section of the New Zealand youth trials at Auckland later this season.
The very promising Penney is best known for his deeds in the two-man J.C. class, but in recent weeks he has been concentrating on improving his performances in a Laser. His preparation had its reward when he was the top Canterbury skipper in the Laser division at the South Island youth championships at Pigeon Bay during Easter week-end. Penney was actually the runner-up to the reigning New Zealand Laser titleholder, Russell Coutts (Dunedin), at Pigeon Bay, and was comfortably clear of the third place-getter, Bruce Manning (Dunedin). A P-class graduate, Neil Fitzgerald, also sailed creditably in a borrowed Laser, being fifth over-all and second to Penney among Canterbury entrants. The confirmation of Pen-
ney’s nomination for the trials completed the Canterbury squad. Barry Willcox and Gregor Bowater had previously been chosen to take part in the two-man event. Greymouth skippers dominated the Paper Tiger racing, Kevin Jamie and Peter Clark (Christchurch) won the J.C. contest, and Chris Brailsford (Christchurch) was successful in the Moth division. Leading place-getters were.— Lasers: R. Coutts (Dunedin) 1, P. Penney (Christchurch) 2, B. Manning (Dunedin) 3. Paper Tigers: I. Morgan (Greymouth) 1, M. Coll (Greymouth) 2, M. Holmes (Greymouth) 3. Starlings: R. Hall (Christchurch) 1, M. Milburn (Christchurch) 2, H. Cullen (Christchurch) 3, J. C.: K. Jamie and P. Clark (Christchurch) 1. H. and M. McGregor (Christchurch) 2, N. Buckley and M. Bamford (Christchurch) 3. Moths: C. Brailsford (Christchurch) 1, G. Chapple (Christchurch) 2, M. Smith (Christchurch) 3.
