Couldwell breaks record

The New Zealand crosscountry representative, Martin Couldwell broke the existing record for the annual Mount Hutt marathon, at Ashburton yesterday. Couldwell, from the University Club, completed the 42-kilometre course in 2hr 24min 31; 14 seconds faster than the record set by Mel Radcliffe in 1976. Couldwell said he found the run “'pretty easy,” but had not anticipated finishing with such a fast time. “I ran too fast, this was only meant to be a training run,” he said at the finish of the marathon. This was his first marathon and he was aiming for a time of two hours 35 minutes, he said. Couldwell took the lead after the 20-mile mark and held it until the finish line on Russell Avenue, in Ashburton. A close second was Dave Gardiner, from South Canterbury, who finished in 2hr 26min 3s. Third was Peter Crosby, of Ariki, in 2hr 34min, 21. The first veteran to cross the line was Eric Hunter, from University, who was

sixth. The first Ashburton runner home was J. Hewes in 45th place. . Bev Tweedie (Christchurch), was the first woman home in 3hr 37mm 22. The oldest runner to finish was the 65-year-old doven of the sport, John Drew (Veterans), who tailed the 112 finishers to record a time of shr 44min. Conditions were pertect for the marathon, which started from the foot of Mount Hutt. Entries were down on last year, because of the Fletcher Marathon being held at Rotorua next Saturday. This, combined with the petrol shortage, reduced the field to 150 this year, compared to 234 last
