Hayes surprise squash winner
PA Tauranga Rod Hayes, of Canterbury, caught everyone by surprise when he beat Ross Norman, of Auckland, to win the men’s final of the national under-23 squash championships, at Tauranga yesterday. Norman, the top seed, had apneared in dynamic form leading up to the final, especially with his 9-0, 9-0, 9-4, defeat of the 16-year-old Stuart Davenport (Hawkes Bay) in the semi-finals.

the third, lost the fourth, and won the fifth decisively, 9-L Annette Owen, of Auckland, the third seed, won the women’s title for the third time by beating the fourth seed and defending champion, Robyn Blackwood, of Auckland. Miss Owen was in great form throughout the tournament and there seemed little doubt she would win .
