Lost ground
Copen Ali, the favourite, threw his head in the air and lost three lengths at the start of the Papanui Handicap at Riccarton yesterday. Although ridden with vigour he failed to make up his lost ground and finished fifth. Country Minstrel, another runner in the Papanui Handicap, lost approximately five lengths at the start. M. D. Mein, the rider of Latchmi, which finished third in the Papanui Handicap, was fined $2O when he weighed in 0.75 kg in excess of his weigh-out weight.
