Aust. Derby stake up
NZPA Perth The Australian Derby, to be run over 2400 m at Ascot, Perth, on December 26, will carry total prize money of $500,000. And the Perth Cup, to be run over 3200 m on January 1. will be worth $300,000. The stake increases were announced by the chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club, Sir Ernest Lee-Steere. The stakes lift was intended to boost Western Australia’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The increases were made possible by the joint sponsorship of racing by a television channel and another sponsor, whose identity will be announced soon. Sir Ernest explained that the stake money for the Australian Derby would be lifted from $200,000 to $250,600,
An additional sponsor’s bonus of $250,000 would be paid to the winner if it had also been successful in the Western Australian Derby and the Marlboro Fifty Thousand.
This meant that if a horse completed the WA. Derby-Marlboro-Australian Derby treble it would earn a total of $493,500.
