Shooters gain good scores
Many shooters responded to i the favourable conditions at the/ Burnett range yesterday morn- I ing when the 20 elected marks- < men in the New Zealand Dewar i Cup team fired their international smallbore rifle match. The event was the last of the I New Zealand championships and the cream of the country’s best i shooters were blessed with the 1 best weather of the week end — < mild and with little wind. Although there were several i creditable scores, it was a little I disappointing that eight team members failed to reach 390 out 1 of the possible 400. However, the team’s total of 7818 was 170 points better than the score re- ! corded by the Dewar Cup team on the same range two years ago when conditions were considerably tougher. Barry Kemps (Waikato), who was fifth in the national 50yd I and 100 yd championship on Sun-1 day, led the scoring with an excellent 398. He dropped only one I. point in 20 shots over both the ! 50yd and 100 yd ranges. The triple Olympic Games rep-1:
resentative, lan Ballinger (Christchurch), had a possible over 50yd and dropped four points over 100 yd. He had 25 of his 40 shots in the central bull. * His score of 396 was matchep by the two in-form marksmen of the championships, Rex Davies (Christchurch) and Leon Greibal (Blenheim) and by Bill Drayton (Christchurch), who dropped only one point over 50y’d. Ray Mitchell (Christchurch!, with 395, was four points ahead of the rest. Scoring is done visually and the targets are sent overseas for official marking. Scores were: B. Kemps 398.21; I. R. Ballinger 396.25; L. Greibei 396.22; R. 51. G. Davies 396.21; tV. J. Drayton 396.19; R. L. Mitchell 395.18; K. Smith 391.23; .1. A. Neale 391.17; B. E. Lacey 391.15; G. R. Ballinger 390.20; |S.
