M.P.s’ travel

Sir, —One finds it hard to believe D. A. Carter (April 11) when he disclaims being “one of the Prime Minister’s particular devotees” when he uses the term “tirade of abuse” to describe my characterisation of the Prime Minister’s well-known behaviour. D. A. Carter’s aggrieved partisanship of the Prime Minister is further attested bv his describing the TV2 interviewer’s approach to the Prime Minister as “a provocation,” for if it was the intention to show “what a nasty fellow he is,” how totally predictably the Prime Minister responded. A grave defect of our democracy is

the complete lack of control we exercise over our representatives once elections have confirmed them in office. TV and newspaper journalists are the means by which we monitor the performance of our representatives. D. A. Carter, who pointedly refers to the democratic freedom I enjoy, is moved to injured protest when it is exercised on my and his behalf.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. April 11, 1979.
