Late sport Roller skating upset

John Chesmar (Masterton), the veteran of the field, (caused the upset of the New I Zealand banked track roller | skating championships at ; the Rollerdrome yesterday. I Chesmar sprinted clear i 300 m from the finish of the | (senior men’s 20,000 m race land took Calvin Gabites (South Canterbury) with him. Gabites finished ahead of Chesmar, but it was the sudden jump by Chesmar: that prevented Stephen Car-well-Cooke (Manawatu) from making a clean sweep of the senior events. For Chesmar this was his third medal of the championships, and the silver medal equalled his previous best when he had finished runner-up to Peter Maxwell (Masterton) in the two-man sprints at Masterton in 1974. Carwell-Cooke failed to finish in the placings, but' looked quite happy as he) cruised home in fourth place. Earlier he had won the four other events, which ranged from 500 m to 10km and showed he was virtually a class above his opposition. Only two intermediate men competed, with none of the Wellington skaters in any section appearing for the championships. and Mark Gabites (Hawkes Bay) comfortably beat Brent Singer (Rollerdrome) in all three title races. This was Gabites last foray in the intermediate grade and he now joins the seniors.

A twelve month lay-off which caused Karen Yorke to miss consideration in the team for world bank-track racing in Argentina, has not stopped the 1975 world road champion from proving that she is still the number one woman skater in the country.

She won all four titles and added this aggregate to her other two gained at Christmas on the road and flat track. Competing against three other internationals, Mrs Yorke won her longest race, (5000 m by a lap from the (placegetters, a similar marI gin to the shorter 3km [scratch race. With a team to be sell lected in Masterton in a >’l month’s time for both road r j and track world champion- ; ships, it is hard to see the t selectors finding any one ' good enough to stay or ■ assist Mrs Yorke, who is - admittedly still not at peak fitness. Mrs Yorke said that she ! will need to attend the trial (in Masterton, for the racing! ) which will help her peak ( | “but at this moment I do! tjnot know where the money > | will come from for that plus ('other meetings 1 will have ‘lto attend in the North Island > to get more competition. We > have been told it is up to us l to find the money ourselves j to compete in Italy. This is ■ the reason some of the •_ skaters are not available for ■ the worlds — Calvin Gabites i for example,” she added. One girl who could force herself into the team is Sandra Willan (Roller- ; drome), who won all three (intermediate women’s cham- ' pionships from Wendy Morigan, of Masterton, who had (beaten her on the road at (Christmas. ( Since then Miss Willan has trained with Mrs Yorke, ’and this week-end showed the results of that effort. Results. —
