Three-way golf tie
PA Palmerston North. When Michael Barltrop (Manukauj landed his first putt of any note in the final round at the eighteenth, he created a threeway tie in the North Island amateur golf championship in Palmerston North yesterday. When Barltrop and Paul Hartstone (Waikato) made their charges, they denied Terry Pulman (Auckland) the honour of winning the event on his own. Pulman had played fine, steady golf throughout the tournament and went into the final round with a handy five stroke lead. However, he showed early on I that the situation was having an I effect on him, by dropping ‘strokes on each of the first two [holes. He steadied his ola v after that | to be two over after nine holes,
but later on in the round dropped further strokes to finish with a 78 and an equal share of the title. Hartstone, an early favourite for the title, started so badly that he virtually disappeared from the race. However, after his first round disasters (he scored 81), Hartstone improved with each round starting with a 75 in his second and a 71 in his third. Leading scores were:— 294— P. Hartstone (Waikato), 81. 75 71. 67; M. Barltrop (Manukau), 75. 77. 71. 71: T. Pulman (Grange), 72. 73. 71, ?§. 295— P. Burner (Manakau), 77. 76 68 74. 297—5. Morpeth (Manawatu). 82. 70. 69 76. 391—C.
