Gang-assault on youths alleged
PA Auckland The Auckland police were last evening still seeking gang members reported to have assaulted two youths with their crash helmets and a gun butt at Silverdale on Saturday afternoon. The youths told the police they were in the cab of a truck with a girl, and another girl riding on the tray, behind the cab, about noon. They said between 15 and 20 gang members on motorcycles, believed to be Hells Angels, surrounded the truck and stopped it from turning off the main road. As the driver stopped the truck, a gang member jumped on to the tray and threatened the girl, while the two youths were also threatened.
The driver stopped in the Silverdale township and brought out a shotgun, threatening the gang members. They retreated at the sight of the firearm. When he thought they were a safe distance the driver put away the shotgun, which the police said he was entitled to be carrying. Immediately the gang jumped the two men, hitting them with their helmets and with the butt of the gun. As members of the public approached the scene the gang members scattered. A Takapuna police spokesman said investigations were centred on the whereabouts of members of the Helis Angels gang.
