Rotarians defend exchange
PA Invercargill Publicity over the return home of the German Rotary exchange student, Suzanne Teipel, should not be allowed to obscure the benefits of the Rotary student youth exchange programme, the District Governor of Rotary in the South Island, Mr J. T. Travers, of Blenheim, has said after an area assembly at Milton. He said the student exchange scheme had been fully discussed at the Milton assembly and it was felt that’ because of its outstanding success it should not only be encouraged, but if possible, be expanded. However, it was felt necessary to have a firm code of discipline. “Rotary is very conscious of the heavy responsibility that it accepts as host to students entrusted by their parents to its care and certain rules have been formulated from long experience with overseas students, which are designed both for the protection of the student as well as for the maintenance of public confidence in the integrity of Rotary,” Mr Travers said.
