Feilding Distance should help Ariana

Special correspondent Wellington. . Ariana’s run for fourth behind Chinkara at the W airarapa meeting on Saturday indicated that the mare could be ready to step up to a distance, a change she gets in today’s Goodbehere Memorial at Feilding. The mare has been off the winning list since taking a 2000 m race at Woodville last November, but she has been running useful races in top-class company. including a second in the Pahiatua Cup and third in the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes, behind La Mer. Koiro Trelay has more than a touch of class at his best and if that best has not been seen to full advantage lately the drop in class here will be in the youngster’s favour. In t)ie Centennial Cup on Saturday Koiro Trelay was well back in the field and made ground steadily in the straight, finishing on strongly in the end. Sulieman was scratched from the Cup on Saturday, but will make his comeback in the Goodbehere. Off the scene for many { months through injury, he showed something of his former sparkle in a trial at Awapuni recently when finishing third. Sovereign’s Knight has been running some game races lately without managing to pick up a first prize, a situation that looks ike being remedied in the second leg. the Borthwick Handicap. Ra Tapu found the holding ground at Awapuni last month too much for him, for he faded out in the closing stages. Before that, though the five-year-old had been turning in some sterling performances, finishing in the money on four consecutive occasions.
