Rain-interrupted service
Sir, — The downpour last Sunday afternoon which interrupted the special Palm Day celebrations in Cathedral Square was clearly God reprimanding the Rev. J. Consendine for his distorted definition of capitalism. The freedom to use one’s initiative, to save and invest, and thereby create well-paid employment, with good superannuation, paid holidays and good working conditions, is immeasurably better than direction from the State. Perhaps Father J. Consedine for his disbetter advised explaining away the alternative to capitalism as it is currently exemplified in Cuba, China, East Germany, Vietnam, Czechoslovakia and other Communist countries. New Zealand is a fine country in Which to live, it was developed to its present high state by people with initiative and the ability to save and invest, not by the clammy hand of socialism, or in its absolute state, communism. A child with a little school savings account is a little capitalist. Are they too being condemned by Father Consedine? — Yours, etc., FRANK FREEMAN. April 10, 1979.
