Rhodesian elections

Sir, — Lately we have been informed by the media that “one-person-one-vote” elections are being held in Rhodesia. I wish to point out to the public of New Zealand that this is not true. The white voting population of Rhodesia is only 140,000, while the black voting population -is 2,800,000 — 20 times that of the white population. However, in the new 100-seat Parliament, the whites will hold 28 seats (when they are only entitled to five), and the blacks will hold only 72 seats. In other words, each black vote is worth only a small fraction of each white vote. Whichever way you juggle the figures, this is not “one-per-son-one-vote” and it is not racial equality. No wonder Joshua Nkomb and his organisation do not just fade away quietly. More power to them, until this injustice is eradicated. — Yours, etc., GEORGIE HALL. April 12, 1979.
