Somoza troops push back rebel lines in Esteli
NZPA-Reuter Managua (Nicaragua! National Guard troops fought guerrillas house-to-house in the northern city of [Esteli at the week-end and 27 persons were reported to have been killed in guerrilla violence in the capital and ■ Other Nicaraguan cities. A National Guard spokesman. Colonel Aquiies Aranda Escobar, said the Guard had reduced the rebel-held sector of Esteli to a -mall area i cent red on the El Calavahio i neighbourhood, and he claimed the final pockets of ' reistance would be eltmiinated soon. Asked when he thought the Sandinistas yvould launch a general offensive to try to overthrow President Anastasio Somoza * regime. Colonel Escobar said he felt the offensive had already begun, but the National Guard had succeeded in blunting it.
