Union Carbide sees further growth
NZPA Sydney Union Carbide Australia and New Zealand, Ltd, expects to achieve a continuing improvement in sales and profit, providing the Australian economy continued to improve, and inflation was “kept in check.” In his address to today’s annual meeting, Mr Jackson said a number of factors contributed to the 12.7 per cent improvement in sales in the last financial year. The chairman (Mr T. F. W. Jackson) told the annual general meeting that the outlook for the New Zealand economy was less optimistic, but he said: “The New Zealand subsidiary should be well-placed to continue its contribution to the earnings of the group.” The company has made a decision to cease production of herbicides, because production was no longer economic with its existing obsolete equipment, and investment in new equipment was unwise in the face of price-competitive imports.
