South Africa and sport
Sir, — Contrary to Mr T, Mitchell’s claim (April 9), H.A.R.T. does not try to have us, or anyone else, believe that New Zealand is the only country having apartheid sports contacts with South Africa. It has often stated that other countries are also guilty of this. But, being a New Zealand group, its task is to monitor this country’s performance, leaving anti-apartheid groups overseas to check their own countries’ positions. What H.A.R.T. has said is that New Zealand has been the least diligent in applying the Gleneagles Agreement, and that, because of the prominence of rugby both here and in South Africa, New Zealand is in a special position. Our support, particularly in rugby, often means more to racist South Africa than that from other countries. But, in any case, is Mr Mitchell suggesting that two wrongs make a right — that because other countries support racism, we should too? —Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. April 10, 1979. f J
