Loss of trees and birds
Sir, — Mr Taiboys is to be commended for the compassion he has shown over the tragic execution of Mr Bhutto. However, here in New Zealand thousands of native trees and birds are executed every year with the same contempt as that given Mr Bhutto. Unlike the human species that is rapidly increasing in the world, our native trees and birds in New Zealand are decreasing at an alarming rate, all in the name of big business. We can sympathise with Mr Talboys’s outraged feelings over Mr Bhutto’s in the face of
world-wide objection. Yet, a fellow politician of Mr Talboys is not swayed from the execution of our priceless native bush and bird life in the face of New Zealand’s largest petition, the Maruia Declaration, with its 341,160 signatures including those of many eminent citizens. I invite Mr Taiboys to join our ranks and we can all wring our hands helplessly together. — Yours, etc. S. HEMSLEY, Lyttelton. April 8, 1979.
