Wool slips at Dunedin sale
PA Dunedin Halfbred fleece was 5 per cent cheaper at the Dunedin wool sale yesterday compared with the Christchurch sale last Friday. Halfbred skirtings fell 2| per cent but Merino fleece was firm. Crossbred oddments and crossbred lambs’ wool were back 2J per cent, and crossbred fleece, skirtings and second-shear were all in buyers’ favour. The Wool Board bid on 2.6 per cent of the offering, and bought or had passed to it 164 bales — 0.5 per cent of the total offering. The main competition came from Western and Eastern Europe supported by Japan and New Zealand mills; limited support came from Bradford mills. The limited range of fine wool was of average to good quality. The crossbred fleece was well grown and reason-
ably sound but yellowing and cotting showed in most grower lines. A big offering of crossbred lambs’ wool, was generally of good length and colour. Careless shed handling spoilt much of the secondshear and lambs’ fleece and many otherwise excellent lines would be heavily discounted in the trade for this fault, said the official report. The range of prices included.—
