Apples for Hawaii rejected

PA Hastings About 30,000 cartons of Red Delicious apples have been rejected for export because of leaf roller. The fruit was rejected by two United States Ministry of Agriculture fruit inspectors who have been working in Hawke’s Bay since last month.

The Red Delicious were part of a shipment to be sent to Hawaii. Only a few instances of the pest were found by the inspectors but one affected carton is enough to ensure the rejection of fruit from an entire block of trees. Mr A. Cross, the regional manager of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board, said the shipment to Hawaii was only a minor portion of what the United States took each year. About 200,000 to 300,000 cartons of Granny Smith apples were sent to the United States each year. Red Delicious were not exported to the United States mainland because it is the most commonly grown variety there.
