Canty just wins squash
In a closely contested encounter for the Viv Hargreaves* Shield, at Tintaru, the Canterbury squash rackets teams narrowly beat Southern Districts by 35 matches to 31. 'The Canterbury senior teams had to produce some solid squash against the southern teams which always seem to be harder to beat at Timaru Canterbury’s men won 11 matches to nine and the women had their hardest-ever task and were perhaps fortunate to win, i 7-a. , The under-23 men’s event was won by Canterbury, 7-5, and the women’s was drawn. 6-6. Southern took the junior boys’ event bv six matches to four. The ’ top-ranked Canterbury .player, Rod Hayes, was devastatllng in polishing off Brian Simpson in three games. He was ■ quick to the volley and kept Simpson on the move with accurate drop shots and tight, crisp driving. Pau! McFadtlen had little trouble with Simpson in the second series of matches, but Simpson was obviously favouring! one leg which he had injured in a collision with Hayes near the end of their match The IS-vear-old, Jamie Bushell, tn his first games for ’Canterbury, turned in two good per-
formances. He lost narrowly to ! the rangy Otago player, Ross 1 Fitzlmmons, In five long games I and then just over on hour later I was on the court agaiu to beat 1 Kevin Leary in a long four-game i match. Lindsay Walton had two good I wins over the experienced Bill McAuley and Bob Bowman. With two of last year's Inter- I district team unavailable. Can- I terbury’s women did not have an easy time of it. Merle Holland looked short of ' match play and had no answer to the powerful play of Joanne Milne and then later went dowh to some fine touch play by Dunedin’s Jean Stevens. Kathv Graham had an excellent match with Miss Milne, scoring many points with her pet shot, a firm, low forehand down the wall, while Miss Milne impressed with her clean stroking and fine court coverage.
