Spinal-unit tenders

Seven Christchurch companies have tendered for the construction of the stage two of the spinal-injury unit at Burwood Hospital. This stage will include a 10-bed hostel and four selfcare units attached to the main unit. The hostel and the self-care units will be used to house patients as they recover after initial treatment at the unit. The planning officer of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr L. D. Lindsay) said that the type of accommodation was a unique concept in New Zealand. The original estimate for construction of the hostel and selfcare units was $718,500. It is hoped that work on stage three of the unit, estimated to cost $2.3M will be able to start later this year.
