Solo mothers
Sir, —I gather from S. R. Campbell’s letter (April 9) that he is quite happy about the Social Welfare Department paying out benefits to single girls and their illegitimate children. I believe that if the father of the child is known, then he is the one who should support the solo mother and their child until it is aged 16. Why should we, the taxpayers, pay these girls if the father is about and working? If the father of the child is not known, then the child should be adopted out. Fewer handouts from the Social Welfare Department might make some of these young single people more careful.—Yours, etc., R. BURNS. Lyttelton. April 9, 1979.
