Teacher training
Sir, — Many concerned parents and dedicated teachers have expressed alarm over the unsatisfactory situation of classroom control in New Zealand schools. No single person has made greater efforts to bring about this awareness than John Leversedge. Suddenly one of the principal implementors, of the playway type system, in the person of Dr Mann, asks: “Who is this Mr Leversedge who, writes letters to ‘The Press’ criticising my department for its inability to train student teachers in how to face
and handle the realities of a classroom situation?” Dr Mann could well take a lead from his peers in Wellington, including the Minister of Education, who recently accepted submissions from the New Zealand Education Standards association for evaluation. Dr Mann could at least give Mr Leversedge an audience to present his case. The ship’s officers should spend more time listening to the crew rather than isolating themselves on the bridge. —- Yours, etc., JOHN QUIRKE, Member, National Council N.Z.E.S.A, Tauranga. April 8, 1979.
