West German Rotary scholar
Sir, — We have recently enjoyed being host-parents of an overseas Rotary exchange student. This young lady clearly understood her obligations under the scheme, attending school as required and avoiding romantic attachments. The clear rules laid down and the observance of those rules avoided dual standards for our own children and our guest and allowed us to accept the responsibility of caring for an attractive girl whose parents we have never met. What a pity that one student, aided by our sensation-seeking media, can cause doubts about this excellent scheme. Hundreds of New Zealand students have travelled overseas and hundreds have come to New Zealand. Surely this can only improve international understanding and be a valuable experience for students and hosts. An unbiased news service should surely seek opinion from incoming and
outgoing students and hosts before creating a heroine out of one individual who breaks a rule she agreed to accept. E. K°and McKESSAR. April 10, 1979.
