Jail term trebled at appeal
PA Auckland A motorist who appealed against convictions, including assault on a traffic officer, has lost his appeal and has had his jail sentence trebled. The original sentence of one month’s imprisonment was quite inadequate, said Mr Justice Holland. John George Robinson, aged 26, appealed against convictions and sentence on charges of assaulting an Auckland City Council traffic officer and refusing to give a blood specimen. His Honour confirmed the convictions and increased the sentence to three months imprisonment. saying the sentence was inadequate. Robinson, he said, had three previous convictions for either resisting or assaulting law-enforcement officers. The administration of justice and the needs of society were such that law-enforcement officers had to be protected and persons who resorted to violence punished. His Hdnour confirmed the sentence of one month’s imprisonment on the blood-alcohol charge, to be served concurrently with the three months for assault.
