Airline pilots’ strike

Sir, —I am one of the longsuffering public disgusted completely by this childish affront to the people by employees of Air New Zealand. Leaving aside completely the details of their union dirty washing and petty so-called justifications, I think the public and the news media should protest more vehemently. “The Times,” of London, had the perfect answer to this kind of petty bickering — politely closing its doors for a few months till the employees came to their senses or found other employment. These goldbraided pilots, already grossly overpaid, should be told that Air New Zealand will close down completely for a cooling period while private enterprise such as Mount Cook Airlines. Nationwide Transport and other “pay-their-own-way” enterprises take over. The timing of strikes by pilots and cooks and stewards, etc., is aimed directly at the farepaying public at key times such as Easter. —Yours, etc., D. WILSON. April 9, 1979.
