Parachute attempt postponed
Adverse weather has forced four parachutists to postpone an attempt to cross Cook Strait. The Nelson men had hoped to make the attempt today, but wind speeds fell late yesterday and the venture was postponed until tomorrow. Subsequently, a further deterioration . in the weather forced postponement of the attempt for an undetermined period. They hope to become the first parachutists to make the crossing. They will be dropped from an aircraft about 5000 m above Perano Head and will need at least 40-knot winds to carry them across the Strait.
The parachutists will use air-foil parachute canopies and intend to drift with the easterly winds across the Strait to Ohau Point on the Wellington coast. The crossing, if successful, will take about 30 minutes, boats will follow them all the way. The parachutists, John Frew, Paul Lewis, Paul Kroupa. and Morrie Campbell, will have to use oxygen during the flight, which will now be attempted as soon as the weather is suitable.
