Hand held in fire
PA £ Auckland A man held the hand of his son, aged seven, in a fire until a blister appeared to try to cure him of being a firebug, it was said in the Magistrate’s Court at Otahuhu yesterday. Motu Heta, aged 34, a builder’s labourer, admitted a charge of wilfully ill-treat-ing his son in a manner I likely to cause unnecessary! suffering. He was remanded on bail to April 24 for sentence. Detective Sergeant S. D. Mangnall said that on February 12 Heta arrived home from work intoxicated and saw that his son had lit a newspaper fire in the garage.
The son was asked to show how he made and lit the fire. This the boy did. Heta grabbed the boy, by the arm and held his hand in the flame until a large blister appeared. About 10 days later the police were told of the incident by school authorities.
When the boy was seen by the police he had a blister the size of a 50c coin on his hand. It appeared to be verv sore and was weeping fluid.
Heta told the police that the boy had turned into a fire-bug and he had tried to cure him by holding his hand in the fire.
