Nurses call for change to act
PA Wellington A remit urging the amendment of the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act, 1977, was carried at the annual conference of the New Zealand Nurses’ Association in Wellington. The remit urges the inclusion of nurses among those permitted to counsel persons aged under 16, according to a supplied statement from the association. An urgent telegram was sent to the Ministers of Health, Justice, and Education detailing the content of the remit.
Introducing the remit, the Auckland branch said the matter had become urgent in view of the proposed vaccination of intermediate school pupils against rubella. Nurses vaccinating Form II girls would have to ensure that the girls were not pregnant at the time of vaccination, or likely to become pregnant within three months. Thus nurses working on the vaccination programme ran the risk of legal proceedings when performing a preventive-health programme.
