Awards made for rescues
A Fryndwr man, Peter; Frank Johnson, of 471 Springbank Street, has been! awarded a bronze medal by! the Royal Humane Society! of New Zealand. The award was made for; Mr Johnson's rescue of al woman who was drowning; in the surf off the] Scarborough breakwater last; June 15. Mr Johnson swam 50m through cold, rough water to| reach the woman. He suf-; fered a broken toe and lacer-i ations from rocks on the shore -when he brought thej woman to safety. Four other awards have! been made. Certificates of; merit were given to Con-; stables Maurice Glen Dixon! and Graham Garry Patterson, of Wanganui, for their;
| rescue of a fisherman whose 'boat capsized off Castle Cliff; I beach, near Wanganui, on], ■ February 12, 1978. I A certificate of merit was! ; also presented to Mrs Ju-j lianne Turere McDonnel for, her rescue of two girls who! | had fallen from a capsized! I punt into Lake Rotoaira, .near Taupo, on March 19,: ■ 1978. An in-memoriam certificate was awarded to Sharon! | Marie Anderson for her un-| (successful attempt to rescue! her brother after both were (swept into deep water off! (Ohope Beach, near Whaka-| tane. Both children were! ; brought ashore but Sharon (could not be revived. Both: were aged 10 at the time. ' Alex Frederick Hollenverg, of Rotorua, has already re-! ceived the society’s bronze medal for his part in the: rescue.
