Washdyke lay-offs

PA Timaru A “dramatic” price increase for pickled lamb pelts has forced New Zealand Light Leathers to scale down its crust-tanning work at. Washdyke and lay off 45 temporary employees. A world-wide shortage had caused the price of the pelts to rise about 82 per cent since the end of December, according to the general manager (Mr D. S. Wildman). The price had spiralled from $39 to $7l a dozen, he said. The workers, affiliated to the Canterbury Meat Workers’ Union, were engaged three months ago on an understanding that their employment was temporary. “It is the company’s intention to increase the finished leather operation, which should enable the reengagement of labour in the tannery next year,” Mr Wildman said.
