Cricket changes coming
The first-class cricket season will wear a different look again this year. Some slight changes in the Shell series were agreed by the Cricket Council’s board of control at the week-end, but an announcement will probably not be made for a couple of weeks.
Player behaviour was a source of some concern to the board; both from umpire reports and from the players’ committee, and as a result all first-class players will receive the next preseason circular. Usually this just goes to captains. The West Indies tour itinerary for next year has not yet been completed, but there will be three tests, at Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin, the latter two subject to confirmation that their pitches will be satisfactory. Christchurch will probably be the venue for a one-day and a three-day game. In with a roar 10 years ago, out with a whimper. The eight-ball over has gone from New Zealand first-class cricket and, with that, from world cricket. With no comment and no discussion, the board of ocntrol decided to revert to sixball overs. Australia has recently decided to turn to six-ball overs from next season, and New Zealand would have been in isolation if it had retained eight-ball overs. Not that that was a factor; the change originated from a recommendation of the players’ committee.
