Badminton Railway, South Brighton lead
Railway and South Brighton shape us as the strongest combinations in the A grade badminton competition after both recorded convincing wins in the opening round of play at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday. Both achieved 8-0 winning margins, Railway dropping only two games to Canterbury and South Brighton three to Hagley 1. These two teams meet in the second round on April 21 and the result seems likely to be close. Brenda Anderson, making a return to regular competitive play, did not have a happy day for Canterbury, but Robyn Erskine and Mike Nolan, in their debut games for Railway, will be well! satisfied with their perform- j I ances. I Stephen Chambers, the promising junior, looked a useful player 1 ; for Hagley 1. taking Ross Camp-; bell to three games and. with Charles Wasle.v, forcing Camp-I bell and Paul Boatwood to three! games in the men's doubles. Hagley II made a good start to, the season,, beating University. I 6-2. David Bell was the oniyj player to lose his singles, against Grant Girdler. Rosey Kerr and Karen Burn had good wins in their singles matches and combined well in ' the women's doubles. Knox had to fight hard io beat North Beach-Christchurch, 10 games to nine. The men and women in both teams had contrasting results in the singles: Warren Edgecumbe and Eion Kirkland had comfortable wins for Knox, but Alison Ross, and Jane Clarke in her A grade debut,.made amends and brought North Beach back on level terms. Both teams won a mixed doubles and the women’s doubles went to North Beach in straight i games. David Ross and Mark Reid won the first game in the men’s doubles, putting North Beach ahead on games, 9-8. but the experienced pair of Edge cumbe and Kirkland rallied and look the next two games, by fairly easy margins. The second round should be interesting. Railway will meet South Brighton while the other first-round winners, Knox and « Hagley 11. will also play each other. Hagley I will meet University and Canterbury will play North Beach-Christchurch. Points: Railway, South Brighton 14. Hagley II 12. Knox 10, North Beach-Christchurch 4.
