Melbourne Cup stolen
NZPA Sydney The 1977 Melbourne Cup won by Gold And Black haa been stolen from a bank In Sydney while It was on display. The gold cup, valued at 85500, had been lent to Pitt Street branch of the Commercial Banking Company, of Sydney, for a display promoting the Golden Slipper and Australian Jockey Club autumn carnival. Police believe the thief picked up the perspex case containing the cup and its wooden stand and simply walked from the bank unnoticed. The cup has been on display since March 14. It is inscribed “Melbourne Cup 1977 — won by Mr and Mrs J. Harris and Mr and Mrs H. G. Gage with Gold And Black.” Mrs Gage said she was very upset about the loss because of the cup’s sentimental value.
